Daily Sketching

I’m still sketching daily here. I’ve been experimenting a bunch more this week some hits and a bunch of misses. But I keep at it. It will get better with time and practice. I really believe it.

On Wendesday, I wanted to draw from a picture so I tried to recreate this bracelet and here’s my version.

and then on Thursday I tried to make this purse and realized again that I suck at the color pencils so I tried to add water and that turned out to be a disaster, too:

I felt bummed about my disaster so I made another quick one on Thursday night based on these ballet slippers.

on Friday I wanted to do something different and something that wasn’t a lift of someone’s sketch so I used this toaster:

on Saturday I went back to Andrea’s sketches. I did one half of this side mirror:

And then I did another quickie one based on this sketch of sleeping lovers. Not a huge success.

Sunday, I picked the journals by Andrea:

Monday I discovered Charlie Bowater and fell in love with the girl on a swing.

and Tuesday was another girl:

And here we are. Some experimenting this week. I am still enjoying the process even though some of my sketches make me cringe and I feel discouraged and frustrated more often than anything else, I am still really enjoying this process a lot!

  • These are wonderful. I especially love that stack of books… at this rate you are going to be a MASTER very quickly. Keep plugging along. There is nothing like good old fashioned practice to improve drawing skills. ๐Ÿ™‚

Karen, I think you are being way to hard on yourself!! I think some of the sketches are really lovely, and it is true – drawing does get better with practice – doing a sketch a day will just take longer than full time art school – that’s all. Cheers!

Good for you to keep sketching. I like your drawings.

On another subject: I’m still technically challenged so I totally missed the boat on giving you feedback on Finding Your Way. So I will do it here. I did what you said as best I could. I am totally amazed at how much it changed what I was doing. At first I was all over the place copying your style or someone else’s, but eventually I started to relax and just analyzed (on paper) what I liked and didn’t like about each layout. You would not be able to distinguish my style in a line up, but that’s okay with me because when I see something new I try it on a layout. I then adapt it. I do chronological albums producing about 18 volumes per calendar year (excessive I know), but it makes me happy to write, photograph and craft. What better use of my time? I abolutely MUST tell the full story behind the layout. That’s what is meaningful to me. So thank you so much for coming up with a path I could follow!

Thank you so much for the girl on the swing I kind of used it as a Inspiration for my drawing. It is beautiful and you should definitely keep pursuing your art.
