Weekly Diary – February 16 2014

Here are photos from this week:

This week was mostly about David’s birthday which started with donuts and candles.

which he blew effortlessly.

then it was swimming and basketball.

while the little boy found his own friends.

the team won their third consecutive game. there was much joy.

then we came back home and it was time for presents.

David was delighted to get another one of his calculator watches (he lost the previous one and was very sad.)

then we went on an adventure of watching the LEGO movie, which was sold out in quite a few places. We did eventually get to see it and we loved it. And then it was time for cake.

David picked an ice cream cake this time around.

then he went about the business of putting together his new legos while Nathaniel played with the presents Jake’s parents got him.

and then it was photo time.

laughter and joy, as always.

and here we go. so grateful for my life. i hope your week was lovely, too.

Weekly Diary – February 9 2014

Here are photos from this week:

When we were doing parent teacher conferences, Nathaniel was playing on the school computer.

he made himself into an astronaut.

after spending the whole week sick, when I found out that the Exploratorium was free on Sunday, I decided we should all go.

even though it looks nice in this photo, it was pouring rain when we got there and there was a line curving around the block. We were quite wet by the time we got in.

the boys loved everything.

Nathaniel loved watching David.

and David liked messing with the different displays.

this one was all about tinkering.

and one about showing all the heat in your body. I loved this one.

there were chairs everywhere, which I loved.

and this one was jake’s favorite exibit. magnets and copper, can’t get much better.

then it was family photo time.

where there was much laughter, of course.

love my boys so so much.

and here we go. so grateful for my life. i hope your week was lovely, too.

Weekly Diary – January 19 2014

Here are photos from this week:

Nathaniel is a big fan of his new magnets and regularly finds creative uses for them.

I flew to Anaheim for one night just to be at CHA and worked at the Maya Road booth. Terrible photo, I know but it’s proof I was there.

While I was there, Jake took the kids to the Apple store.

where they played and played.

and made these funny photos.

which made me laugh and laugh.

nathaniel played with legos this week while he was home sick with a fever.

he’s always in a good mood, even with a fever.

then he did the puzzle in the cracker box.

and spent some time in his time travel box.

by the time we took photos he was all better.

and would not stop laughing.

making all of us crack up too.

and here we go. so grateful for my life. i hope your week was lovely, too.

Nathaniel Reads to Mommy – Intro and Week 1

Since this is our Year of Learning, my biggest goal for Nathaniel is for him to learn how to read. We’ve been working on it together but it’s not the easiest thing for him, so I decided that our project would be for Nathaniel to read me a book each week. We’ll then make these little cards and make a little book for him at the end of the year.

Here’s our first two books for the year: I love my new toy! and The Pigeon finds a hot dog! You can expect a bunch of Mo williams since Nathaniel loves him 🙂

Here’s to hoping he’s a great reader by the end of 2014.

2014 – Learning with David and Week 1

As I was thinking about what project I’d like to do with David this year, I kept coming back to my theme for the year: learning. I want 2014 to be a year of learning and growth. So it made perfect sense that I would pick a project where David and I could learn together.

What I’ve decided is that we’ll be taking online classes together, using sites like udacity, edx, coursera, etc. and we will make little cards to capture all that David learned each week.

Our first class is by udacity.com and it’s a math class called Introductory Algebra Review.

I hope to do a wide range of subjects together and I know that we might only make it through four classes since they are meant for college so we have to go slowly but it will still be worth it. Here are some I’ve found for us:

We may take all of these or none of these. Either way it’s nice to have a list to draw from.

Here’s to a year of learning!

Weekly Diary – December 28 2013

Here the last photos from this year:

We cleaned up the board game closet this week so the boys played all the games.

then we drove around the neighborhood for some Christmas spirit and lights. This one was a favorite.

then it was Christmas eve, so the boys got to open one present as it’s our tradition. This year, I’d preselected the one they got to open. (That’s why it has different wrapping paper pattern.)

the reason i picked it was because they each got rainbows for their room, which only worked at night so it was a perfect Christmas eve present.

i was worried they wouldn’t work, but they were quite neat.

Christmas day the boys were awake at 6am so I set the table and made some cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip waffles. some fruit, marshmallows, chocolate chips and hot chocolate completed the breakfast.

and, of course, the tulips. i get tulips each year.

we took a photo but there was literally no light at all. it was still dark outside.

then it was time to open the stockings.

and, finally, the presents.

Nathaniel got to go first.

then David.

he kept trying to guess what it was.

and here’s his “thank you so much” face.

he was just as interested in Nathaniel’s presents, of course.

Nathaniel made us some awesome cards at school and here he is presenting his gift.

playing with all the toys is the best part of Christmas.

reading the lego book.

Nathaniel “reading.”

David finally got a microscope after asking for it for years. He was quite thrilled.

then we took some family photos.

the kids just wanted to play, of course, so they are looking at their presents instead of the camera.

and then we screamed Merry Christmas!

and here we go. so grateful for my life. i hope your week was lovely, too. here’s to a lovely 2014!

Bodrum 2013

Before this year ends, I wanted to make sure to share with you my Smash! album I made for our trip home this past summer. I bought the album with the intention to do it while I was there. I bought one for me and one for David. I figured we could journal and collect ephemera while there and do the photos when we got back.

Alas, I didn’t really touch mine. (David didn’t either.)

So when I got back, I decided to sit and do it all. And it took much much longer than I’d anticipated. As it dragged on, I got alarmed that the Smash book had so many more pages than I was going to be able to use. After months of being really sad about this, I was finally able to get over it by removing the last few pages that I knew would be blank. Ta-da! Now I feel good.

So here are the pages:

I bought the doodle one as it was the one I’d wanted to have all along.

i don’t know why this photo is so blue but nonetheless, i covered it with some washi tape to make me happy.

the first few pages is about los angeles where we spent two nights before flying home.

another page about la.

our tickets, about the trip, and the yummy hazelnuts they give on turkish airlines.

a lot of journaling about the first few days.

dad’s map of where we are and the places we’d been so far. and some photos.

my parents’ house is in the Gundogan bay.

more photos and a little bit about how we split our time.

my nephews and my favorite things about being with them.

doing the values exercise on my sister and staying up till the wee hours of the morning.

some of my favorite photos.

and ones of my sister, mom and me. i love these so much.

the boys playing in the sand. and waterguns.

just how much they played with my kids. my nephews are awesome.

mom and dad, who made all this possible.

more sand play.

a few final photos I love so much.

some wrappers from our food there. a little photo of bodrum.

and some luggage tags on the way home.

there you go. a little, lovely album to remind me of the magical times at home.

Weekly Diary – December 21 2013

Here are some photos from this week:

Nathaniel entertaining himself while David is at school.

we took our yearly holiday train at Niles. I know this is not a great photo but I just can’t believe how old David looks.

the light was really tough but I wanted to capture my boys anyway.

the train had Santa, too.

and one more quick shot on the way back home. I love this train.

the next night was the Google holiday party.

a little rare moment where the boys are playing without fighting.

nathaniel looking at me so i can snap a shot.

but only for a moment.

I love the look in his face in this shot.

my two boys.

look how he’s looking up to his big brother.

Nathaniel’s fashion style is unparalleled.

we visited his classroom this week to do “cooking” which was really more like English muffins and decorating with fruits and veggies.

then we went to David’s class where he read the myth he made up. His was about how the black widow got its red mark and it was creative and well-written. I loved it.

then it was the holiday show for 3-5th graders. David’s class sang in hebrew and spanish and english and they played the recorder. It was wonderful.

after we got home, our doorbell rang and when I opened it, I found this on the ground. It was from David’s best friend and they left and dashed. It was delicious cookies.

and then it was photo time.

with tons of tickling, of course.

and here we go. so grateful for my life. i hope your week was lovely, too. Happy December!
