Reading with David – My Father’s Dragon

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I thought it was cool that there was a dragon in the book and how clever the father was about saving it.

I thought it was really sad that the animals captured the dragon and made him cross back and forth. I liked how Elmer gave all the animals things they wanted. Like the rhino whose tusk needed cleaning. I thought the lion looked funny with the ribbons and bows on his mane. And it was awesome that he was able to cross the river by making the crocodiles suck the lollipop and it was funny to see the tiger chewing gum and that he accidentally stepped on a whale while getting to the island.

My favorite part is when he saves the dragon and they fly away as all the other animals are stuck in the crocodiles’ backs.

Reading with David – Pee Wee’s Tale

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I liked that Pee-Wee was free in the park and made friends with Lexi and found the sweet apple.

I liked the part where the bird took him but he was clever enough to bite him just when he was over the water. And how he read the story in the paper and was able to warn all the other animals in time so they could escape. I loved that he started reading to all the other animals and how much they liked it. And how he became friends with all the other animals so they watched out for him and looked for Robbie for him.

I also really liked the ending how Pee-Wee actually realized he was so free now and had a good friend like Lexi and was living a better life and how he saw that Robbie, too, had gotten his wish and had a puppy now so it was happy for both of them.

Another recommendation from our librarian. What a sweet little tale. I know there are sequals to this one and I think we will likely check those out, too since it was so delightful.

Reading with David – Owls in the Family

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I thought it was really cool that they had owls as part of their family. I really liked that the owls walked and liked people and sitting on people’s shoulders.

I liked how Wol was protective of the boys and scared the bullies away when they were hitting the boys. I also like how Billy rescued Weeps and how Wol protected him and took care of him immediately. I also like how Wol scared the crows and Billy’s daddy shot them for being mean. I thought it was funny that Billy’s mom had to feed them breakfast so they wouldn’t follow Billy to school. And I really liked how the owls were allowed in the house and time and how gentle they were.

I was happy that the owls got a new home even though Billy had to move away, he found a good and happy home for the owls.

Reading with David – Much Ado About Aldo

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I liked that Aldo didn’t like to eat animals and became a vegetarian. It was nice that Mrs. Sossi made special lunches for Aldo because he didn’t eat meat.

I didn’t like the part where the chameleon ate the cricket. I thought it was funny that the missing cat was in the drawer all along and I liked how Aldo used that as an idea of how to save the crickets. It was funny when the girl put her hand in the bottom drawer where the chameleons were and screamed. But I liked that the principal listened to Aldo’s story and understood how he felt and was kind.

My favorite part was when the teacher said she was ready to be done with the project and that they could release the crickets to the wild in the warmer weather. I thought it was funny that Aldo asked for more marshmallows.

Reading with David – Babe the Gallant Pig

David says:
I gave this story five stars because the big is always so brave and polite.

I like that Babe wanted to be a sheep herder just like his adopted mom. And I like that Fly took him seriously and taught him everything he knew. And Babe kept trying and trying and making sure he didn’t eat too much and practiced running a lot.

It was great that he saved the sheep from the rustlers and the bad dogs and because of that he got live. He even got to go inside the house with Fly. Fly loved Pig so much that when he thought Pig might be in trouble, he tried very hard to be polite to the sheep so he could find out the truth (and then also again for the password.)

My favorite part was when he won the sheep-dog trials and got a perfect 100!

Reading with David – The World According to Humphrey

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I really liked that the hamster was very intelligent and had different adventures in the book.

I liked the part when Sayeh finally raised her hand because she was trying to get the class to notice Humphrey’s costume. I also loved that he helped Mr. Morales so that his kids would listen better to him. I loved the part where he pulled out the TV plug and the family thought it broke and then later they saw it was unplugged but couldn’t figure out who would have done that.

I liked that he tried to get Aldo to notice the Moonlighter’s ad and used the projector wisely. And he was so clever because he made up a game to get Mr. Brisbane excited. My favorite part was the ending because they built him a playground and he also had an obstacle course and Ms. Mac came back. Finally, I was happy to know that Garth will get to visit him over Christmas Break.

Reading with David – Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Farm

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I like that Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle can cure all the children. My favorite story was the one about the boy who couldn’t find anything because I loved how he found Mr. Piggle-Wiggle’s present and how he said he had the sharpest eyes in the world.

I didn’t like the story where the boy lied all the time because I thought it was mean that he lied and made up stories. But I loved the story where she stopped forgetting to feed the animals because in the end she had gotten so great at taking care of all the animals and they all loved her.

I didn’t like destructiveness story but I loved that in the end he learned how to fix everything he destroyed. And I loved how the scared girl became super-brave by the end of the book.

Reading with David – Harriet the Spy

David says:
I gave this story one star because I thought it was boring. I didn’t like that Harriet was spying on people and going into their houses. I also didn’t like that she wrote down mean things about people.

She went into places without permission. Ole Golly was also mean because she would make Harriet do things right away. I did like the part when she and her boyfriend took a walk together.

I thought it was cool that Sport wanted to be a ball player. I felt bad for him though because he had a hard life having to take care of his dad all the time. I liked Janie because she likes chemistry and likes to blow things up.

Overall, I didn’t like this book because, nothing interesting was happening in it and I didn’t like Harriet and how she was being mean to people and doing things without permission.

Reading with David – The Tilting House

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I liked that their house had many secrets. Each chapter was a new secret.

I thought it was sad when the dad accidentally killed one of Mr. Daga’s children, the baby rat. I thought it was funny that The Talker talked nonstop and thought it was cool that he turned out to be Hanson.

I thought it was interesting that the person who did grandpa’s leg also built the house they lived in. I liked that the box had growth powder to make the key grow. I also liked how Mr. Daga trained the dog and he could get a soda from the fridge. It was cool that the dimmer switch made the house invisible.

My favorite part was when they found the treasure because it meant that they could keep the house.

Reading with David – The City of Ember

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I liked the story was an adventure and we kept hoping Lina and Doon would find the other city and they did.

I thought it was sad that Ember was so dark all the time. And that they were running out of food. I didn’t like that the mayor was stealing from his people and hiding things in the room. It was also sad that the lights flickered so often.

I thought it was nice that Lina took Poppy along in the end. I liked how she was clever enough to run away from the Mayor. I liked Doon’s bug book. I liked that Doon cared about the city and wanted to find a way to save everyone. I thought it was great that they together found the way out. I think because they found a clever way to get the instructions to Ember and Ms. Murdo found them, they will get to get out.

Reading with David – The Secret of Skeleton Island

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I liked that the investigators found gold doubloons.

I liked Chris because he was clever and saved the investigators many different times. He invited them along on this dives and he shared his gold with them when he found some. He was nice to the boys and to his father and I was very happy that he got to help his father get better and go back to Greece in the end.

My least favorite part was when the villains were trying to steal the money and tied up the boys. I liked how Jupiter solved the mystery and came to rescue the other investigators. I didn’t like that the thieves made it look like there was a ghost on the island because they were trying to keep people away.

I liked that everything worked out in the end: the movie and Chris.

Reading with David – Stuart Little

David says:
While this book was cute, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as Charlotte’s Web. I found the language a bit more complicated for David, too. But it was certainly a sweet set of stories.

I gave this story five stars because I thought it was cute that their son was a mouse.

I liked the part where George thought Stuart was dead and lowered the shades to show his respect and Stuart fell out of the shades! I also liked the part where Stuart shot a bow into Snowball’s eye to protect the bird.

I didn’t like the cat that was trying to eat Margalo. I also didn’t like Snowball cause she was sneaky and made it look like Stuart went into the mouse hole when he was actually stuck in the shades.

I liked the story with the boat race because Stuart won! I was happy that Margalo saved Stuart from the trash but I was sad that flew away soon after that. I also was sad that Stuart didn’t get to enjoy his canoe ride with Harriet.
