2013 Sketching – Week 37

My goal for 2013 is to make three sketches a week. If I make more, great. If I don’t, that’s ok. Trying to keep the pressure low while still encouraging myself to draw.

Six Portraits a Week – Week 9 and Sketching

Ok so, I’ve been a little sick of drawing portraits. Maybe cause they’re not getting any better, maybe cause I don’t see much change and I am bored. Maybe it’s completely unrelated and I need to change direction. Not sure. Either way. I did these two:

then I decided it was enough. I tried a 3/4 one from Tam’s lessons and a portrait one. One has a too small a nose and lips and the other, too big.

and then I decided March was going to be sketching month. I have been taking Alisa’s class and I really want to develop a sketch practice. Even if I suck. I want to at least try. So I took a good 75 of my favorite photos and I am trying to sketch one every day. Some days it’s black and white and other days it’s color. Depends on my mood. Right now, I suck at both and they both take too much time. But I am trying.

I’ve done a few in February, here’s what I have so far.

this one was mostly improvised.

i love the butterflies.

this is a photo I took in San Diego a long time ago.

I then did a color version:

then I decided I should stick to mechanical pencil:

I rushed this one:

and then today I went back to color but this took way way too long and I don’t even like it.

so there we are. i will experiment. Some days I will do portraits. some days other things. Some days it will be pencil and other days watercolor. Let’s see if I can find my way. So I will post these on Thursdays just like I was doing for the portraits for now and then we’ll figure it out as we go along.

After I scheduled this post, I saw Julie’s post on Wednesday and she inspired me yet again. And I love this article she linked to as well. Julie is often so very inspiring to me and this post was no exception. And I loved this bit from Ebert’s article:

It seems to me Annette said something like this: Begin with a proper sketch book. Draw in ink. Finish each drawing you begin, and keep every drawing you finish. No erasing, no ripping out a page, no covering a page with angry scribbles. What you draw is an invaluable and unique representation of how you saw at that moment in that place according to your abilities. That’s all we want. We already know what a dog really looks like.

something I will have to keep in mind.

Six Portraits a Week – 8

And here are the drawings for this week.

i ended up not doing most nights this week as I think I was too tired.

so they ended up being completed on Saturday.

I am still working on them. But I do still think that I need to change things up a bit and try some different things. I am just not sure what those are and have not had any time to dedicate to it. Soon.

Six Portraits a Week – 7

And here are the drawings for this week.

no idea what i was thinking with that hair.

this one down on the left is my favorite.

I am still working on them. But I think I need to change course a bit again. Will ponder on it for a while.

Six Portraits a Week – 6

And here are the drawings for this week.

I am still working out the details on how to do each facial part.

Especially the nose. I struggle with the nose.

I am still enjoying these quite a bit. But I am also struggling. Just trying to take it one day at a time and focus on drawing the faces.

Six Portraits a Week – 5

I must admit that I am enjoying drawing these way more now that I am not painting.

I am quite surprised with how different each of them are.

And how each time I think I took a step forward, I also see that I took two steps backward. I spose that’s how it feels to learn.

But I am still enjoying the process. I am still trusting that things will get better, even if slowly. I am trying to take my time. Give myself permission to mess up. My other journal is on its last page so I bought a new journal for February and cannot wait to fill it all up with faces.

Six Portraits a Week – 4

So as I explained last week, I stopped painting my portraits. And I’ll start by saying I am sorry the photos aren’t great quality, I need to rush less and take more time taking higher quality photos.

Having said that I love slowing down and taking more time to draw the faces.

I am trying to experiment with shading and different shapes.

I can see where I struggle and where I need much more practice.

But I am enjoying the process. I am trusting that things will get better, even if slowly. I am ok with that. I think each medium is hard and challenging on its own. I want to do the charcoal/shading first. Experiment with different eye, nose, mouth, face shapes. Different shading. Master all of that. Then move on to paint. One step at a time.

Six Portraits a Week – 3

I’ve been thinking a lot about this project. My thoughts are still not clear so bear with me. Btw, I appreciate all the feedback you’ve been leaving so please don’t interpret my silence as lack of appreciation. I go back and forth between my ideas. Part of me wants to just draw and not paint so I can focus on one thing at a time. Draw more with shading and charcoal for the whole thing. Then focus on painting once I’m really good at the drawing, shading, etc. Part of me likes the painting and doesn’t want t give it up. Part of me wants to draw these, more idealized, faces and part of me wants to make them more emotional, more real, more artistic. I am pretty lost. I will give it a solid think and then decide.

Actually I’m thinking I will move to just drawing them. What do you think? I feel like if I can draw them really really well with lots of great shading and blacks and whites and everything in between, then I can worry about the painting afterwards. First, I can learn to add emotion. I can learn to change expressions. Really really focus on the portraits. And then worry about the painting as phase two.

So with that here are my last set of six painted portraits for a while.

Here they are, painted:

and then here is the next three drawings:

and painted.

Let’s see how the drawing works out.. I make no promisses. I might come back to this. Or even do a different version. Who knows….

Six Portraits a Week – 2

Again, please bear in mind that the whole reason I am doing this project is because I don’t have inherent talent in this area. The while point of this is to practice practice and practice until I get good. Or as close to good I can ever get.

So with that here are my second set of six portraits.

First set of three drawings:

Remember, I take the drawing photos late at night right before I paint, so they are not the best. But I still like to have them as a before and after. Here they are, painted:

and then here is the next three drawings:

and painted.

I have 300 more of these to make.

Constructive criticism always welcome but only if you can actually be constructive. No need to stroke my ego, I know these need a lot of work. I am ok with that 🙂

2011 Projects – Six Portraits A Week

One of my biggest goals for 2011 is to learn how to draw. For reasons that are still not very clear to me, I’ve become obsessed with the idea of learning how to draw faces. To be more specific, I want to learn to paint them. Draw them and then paint them. I am not very interested in graphite drawings. I want drawing and painting.

I have become so obsessed with this idea that I decided to draw and paint six portraits a week. Every single day except for my art journaling day. I might or might not draw one on that day, too. I have a lot of resources for this:

I’ve taken classes from:
– Paulette Insall
– Tam Laporte
– Pam Carriker
and very soon Misty Mawn.
I also have Kelly Rae Roberts’ book

I have no excuse except that I haven’t put in the time. I always feel that I am not talented at this. I cannot draw, etc. etc. The fact is I don’t put the time. I am not super patient so I try to do it all in a few minutes and then balk at my lack of ability. And yet, many artists take hours per drawing. Of course, there are people out there who are way more talented than I am but this doesn’t mean I can’t improve if I put the time in. And that’s my plan this year: to put in the time.

I bought moleskine watercolor journal and altered the front with words I wanted to remember:

And the back is mostly simple, too.

And now my plan is to sit and draw. Everyday till I get better. I am reserving one hour everyday to this. So I will slow down, do it patiently, and try to learn, focus and draw.

Let’s see if I can make it work.

I won’t post my faces everyday (I know you would love that..NOT) but once a week, I will post all six (or seven) I made that week. And hopefully, as the months pass, we’ll all see some progress.
