Books I Read This Week 2018 – 30

I thought I hadn’t read all that much this week but it turns out i read a decent amount.

Mr. Right-Swipe  was terrible. i didn’t like the characters or the plot or really anything about it. I was worried that it’s that i am too old or that I don’t like romance but then I read The Kiss Quotient which was wonderful. I loved it. So there are lovely romance books out there.

Tell the Machine Goodnight was wonderful. I really enjoyed reading it and that even though it was scifi, it was also so real and interesting. I loved the characters and the story.

The Last Time I Lied was meh. I am so done with mystery I think.

Clock Dance was wonderful because i love Anne Tyler. Is it the best one of hers? No but i don’t care. I love her.

Left was a quick read but i loved it too.

The Summer List was meh. I have read too many like this I think so it wasn’t all that great for me.

Here we go. A good week overall.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 29

Ok so clearly I read a lot of books in 3 weeks especially since most of it was vacation.

The Chalk Man  was creepy and interesting and well written. Such a refreshing change from all the not-too-great mystery books out there lately.

I’m Just Happy to Be Here was a quick read and i will say that while I liked some of it, it wasn’t as much my cup of tea.

Am I There Yet? was wonderful. I follow her on instagram and love her drawings.

On Turpentine Lane was mediocre.

The Book of Essie was interesting and not too bad. i was glad to read it.

Something in the Water was actually quite contrived and in the end I didn’t like it.

I read  Driving by Starlight  for book club. It was a book I wouldn’t have picked up and I really liked it.

The Color of Bee Larkham’s Murder was lovely and a bit slow moving in the beginning and totally worth it in the end.

Number One Chinese Restaurant was fun and funny and interesting and I liked reading it.

I just recently watched Love, Simon so I thought it would be fun to read Leah on the Offbeat  and I am glad i did, it was lovely to be back in that world again.

The Sun Does Shine was a tough read and some of it was slow but it was an important read for me and I am glad i did.

Bring Me Back was another mystery that was dragged out and a stupid twist that made me think why i even bothered to read it.

All We Ever Wanted was my first Emily Griffin in years and years. I really loved this one despite totally hating the last one I’d read by her.

Amateur Hour  was a good read. Some of it was so right on that it was almost painful.

The Happiness Curve was an interesting read and made me hopeful for my 50s and 60s.

And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer was different, weird and amazing. I love this author.

Unfuck Your Brain was not worth my time. I didn’t learn anything new and while I curse a lot and don’t mind it at all when others do it, much of the cursing in this book felt wildly unnecessary to me and I don’t like it when authors do it as a gimmick.

That’s where I am now. Reading book #160 which is not a great one.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 26

Even though I was traveling, I ended up reading a lot less than I anticipated this week, mostly due to seeing a lot of family. But I did manage a few good books I’m glad I read.

I follow Megan on Instagram so I was excited to read Body Positive Power and it didn’t disappoint. I need to read this many more times before I can really digest the content and internalize it.

Every Other Weekend was a quick read that i enjoyed.

The Ever After was not worth my time. It’s a fine book for those who like books like this but, for me, it wasn’t really worthwhile.

Wait, What? was fantastic. I had no idea what it was, so no idea what to expect. I loved it.

There There was also fantastic. Interesting, worthwhile read. I really enjoyed it.

The Word Is Murder was also really fun. I have not actually read any of horowitz’ novels despite wanting to many times, so I am so glad I finally read one and also super glad I loved it.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 25

Not a lot this week.

Mem was really really different. I am not sure if I liked it but I also didn’t dislike it.

Getting Back to Happy was great. If you read their blog, you won’t be surprised by much of the content.

The Glitch was fun and a fast read. A bit weird but it didn’t bother me, I enjoyed reading it.

Us Against You is the sequel to Beartown which i loved. I am a bit more distracted this time around but I still love love love these books. His writing is so simple and yet so profound. I love it.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 24

I read a few super short books this week so it looks like I read a lot but it’s not that many.

Pops is a collection of essays and Michael Chabon is such a good writer that I loved reading them very much.

I enjoyed The Ensemble both more and less than I thought I would. The cover is so beautiful, too, isn’t it?

Tin Man was lovely. Painful but also wonderful.

The Electric Woman was fascinating, well executed, a bit longer than I would have liked but I enjoyed its unusualness.

For Every One is super short. worth the read.

How to Walk Away was fun but I didn’t like it as much as I hoped I was going to. I enjoyed it.

Assume the Worst was also super short. Funny, of course.

Calypso was good old Sedaris, whom I love. He didn’t disappoint.

A so-so list this week. A few great ones, and some ordinary ones.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 23

This week was a great week of reading. I loved all of what I read.

I actually read Warlight last week but forgot to write about it. Ondaatje’s words are just such a pleasure to read. This novel wasn’t my favorite but I still enjoyed the words.

That Kind of Mother was wonderful, I really enjoyed reading it.

I enjoyed The Cactus even more. It was one of those quirky main character novels which I’ve read many of by now but I still loved it.

Beauty in the Broken Places was sad. I knew nothing about this story but I enjoyed reading it.

My Ex-Life was fun and quirky, too. I enjoyed it.

Regrets Only was likely my least favorite of all these light novels. I thought the main character was too over the top for me and the novel was just not as tight as I would have liked it, but I read it anyway.

The Queen of Hearts was fun and enjoyable even if it’s not a book i am likely to remember.

In fact, I might not remember any of these for too long but I enjoyed reading all of them and that’s all that matters, especially this week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 22

This week was low on reading. I was working a lot and quite jetlagged when I wasn’t. I spent the evenings working or being with the kids so there wasn’t much reading.

I had read about Love and Gelato and even though it’s not the genre I would usually read, it was fun and light and an okay read.

Essentialism had been in my list for a long time. It was a quick and good read. Good food for thought.

I was looking forward to reading Akata Witch since I heard about it and the book didn’t disappoint. I really enjoyed it and if Fantasy YA is your cup of tea, I’d recommend it.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 21

This was a travel week which means lots of books. I will say I am still in a slump where I don’t really feel like reading and I start a lot of books and stop them.

I picked up First, We Make the Beast Beautiful because Ali mentioned it and I thought it would be an interesting read. It was interesting but also I think I have to read it a few more times.

Blackfish City was an interesting read. I enjoyed it but it was darker than I wanted at that moment.

This Messy Magnificent Life was lovely and I should read more of her.

If You’re in My Office, It’s Already Too Late was a quick read. Interesting and full of tidbits that are helpful.

The Perfect Mother was a different mystery for a change, not about drunk women. It also was honest about how hard it is to be a mom. I really liked that part.

The Girl Who Smiled Beads was sad and empowering at once. It goes to show you that we can overcome so many things in life.

Only Child the best book I read in weeks. It was incredibly sad and very depressing but it was also fantastic. I am glad I read it.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 20

Only a few books this week. I listened to more music than usual and just didn’t find a book I was very into.

I liked Look Alive out There more than i thought i would. She’s funny. Some of the essays are amusing, others didn’t really speak to me but I am glad I read it.

My Oxford Year  was totally meh. Tried to be a Jojo Moyes but wasn’t successful in my humble opinion.

Everybody Lies was a fascinating read and I really liked it. It made me think a lot and started some great conversations.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 19

I flew long distance this week so that meant, there was much reading.

I really enjoyed The Gunners even though it took me a while to really get into it.

Sophia of Silicon Valley maybe should have been but wasn’t all that interesting to me considering I work in the Valley and understood the not so well disguised references. It was ok but really reasonably mediocre.

Tyler Johnson Was Here  was another powerful book about gun violence. I believe these books are important to write and to read.

Only Human  was the final installment of the Themis files and I loved it. I loved this whole series. I hope this author writes more.

Not That Bad was another book that I read because I believe it’s important to read. It was a very tough read but I am glad I did.

It’s Not Always Depression was interesting. I skimmed parts of it but I liked the idea behind it, I’ll see if I can use in the next month and then I’ll know how powerful it really was.

Genuine Fraud was trying too hard. I felt the same way about her previous book so I am not sure why I even read this one but there we are.

My Twentieth Century Evening and Other Small Breakthroughs: The Nobel Lecture was a super fast read and I love love love Ishiguro so I knew I was going to like it and of course I did.

Still in the book rut. I am still starting and stopping so many books.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 18

Circe was an okay read for me, I liked bits of it a lot and thought other bits dragged on longer than necessary but it was different and interesting.

Unbury Carol had such an interesting premise but the book really wasn’t a good fit for me and I didn’t connect with it at any point.

We read The Princess Bride as part of LitClub I teach in my kids’ school and I hate hate hate the movie so I was really not looking forward to reading the book but I will admit that I absolutely loved this book. It was fantastic and hilarious and just such a joy to read.

Family and Other Catastrophes was terrible. It was offensive on so many levels and I know that was on purpose but it was just over the top and I truly didn’t like it. I should have stopped reading it long long before it ended. Absolutely terrible for me.

I’m in a terrible book rut. I keep starting and stopping so many books. Which is extra depressing because I am about to get on an airplane soon again where I have a lot of time to read. So here’s to hoping I get out of the rut!

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 17

Panorama was a really good read. It’s about a plane crash but it’s about so much more. I enjoyed it.

Wedding Date was a quick read, not the type of book I usually like to read but I was traveling and it was easy and quick to read as we drove around.

Brass was a book I’d checked out several times before I got to finally read it and I really really liked it so I am very glad I kept checking it out and finally got around to actually reading it.

The Last Equation of Isaac Severy had so much potential and while it was a bit interesting, it wasn’t as good as it easily could have been. For a topic that was reasonably interesting, the execution was mostly meh.

The Female Persuasion was Wolitzer and she’s always reasonably enjoyable for me and this was no exception. I read it pretty quickly and enjoyed it all the way through.

I couldn’t put The Oracle Year down once I started reading it. Even though it became more and more convoluted and ended on this didactic note, I read it so fast and enjoyed it throughout.

The Oracle Year brought me to #90 for this year. The big upside of all of my upcoming travel is that I get to read more, hopefully.
