Our first day there, we went snorkeling at the great barrier reef. I didn’t bring any electronics with me on the boat. We took this with Jake’s phone on the way back. The kids didn’t throw up at all, which was a miracle. There was no wifi in our AirBnb so I was only able to print one photo.

I ended up not journaling at all during the first week I was there for work. I was going to go back and document it all retroactively, but I decided to just start when the official vacation started instead. Here’s the day the boys all arrived and we flew to Cairns.

This was the first week of school for my kids. After being at two different schools last year, they are finally again in the same school. Nathaniel started third grade and David started seventh. Holy cow! Seventh!
Nathaniel’s been really brave and transitioning to a new school and new classmates pretty wonderfully. And David’s taken to seventh grade like bread to butter. He’s taking a Forensic Science elective and also a Yearbook one.
They are both doing Cross Country at the moment and MathCounts starts the week after next.
Here’s to a wonderful school year for both of my wonderful boys!

This month’s intention is: September: Shine Patiently: September is a month of change. New year. Maybe new school. New routines. New season. This month always comes with changes, adjustments, and revisiting of schedules. Be patient with yourself. Be patient with others. Remember to shine. Even if it’s in small doses. Great reminder to me this month.
Ways to Shine this week:
- One: Bold: It will be bold to survive Wednesday’s adventure to Seattle.
- Two: Open: Open to the possibility that this week will be smooth and i will survive it all.
- Three: Heal/Nourish: I will rest as much as I need to recover from the crazy Wednesday.
I am looking forward to: seeing my Seattle friends in person.
This week’s challenges: Wednesday and Thursday will be challenging.
Top Goals:
- Work: go to Seattle and do dashboard.
- Personal: exercise+food+journaling.
- Family: Jake’s birthday and school!
I will focus on my core desires (bold, mindful, nourish, love) by: trying to take it all one day at a time.
This week, I will say yes to: making it work.
This week, I will say no to: more sadness. i want to snap out of it already.
I am worried that: i won’t exercise. i’ll stop eating well. wednesday will break me. thursday will break me. david will have a bad week. Nathaniel will not make new friends. Packet will be a disaster. I’ll get noting done. Things will fall apart. My flight will have a problem and I won’t make it back home in time. I will disappoint Jake.
This week, I want to remember: i have to take things one step at a time and it will be okay.
How I shone this week: This week was a struggle. The first week of school meant two trips to school. Five trips to work. A get together with a friend. It was busy, crazy, overwhelming. I was tired, grumpy, and rushed all week. But I still showed up everywhere I was supposed to be. I gave everything my 110%. I did the best I could.
Things I wanted to get Done:
- Work: Behind in email still. Bought more tickets to Seattle but still didn’t do blog post. done with packet but never feeds done. No work on dashboard, did the deck+milestones.
- Personal: Exercised 5 times this week. Ate pretty clean, but too much chocolate. cashed check. journaled for the system but not otherwise. didn’t do mapmaker yet.
- Family: went to school Monday and Wednesday. Took photos. Made no plan for David.
I celebrate: first week of school!
I am grateful for: my husband. my kids. their school.
I nourished myself by: eating chocolate. yes, i know not good.
Reflecting on my worries: i managed to exercise and ate well outside of chocolate. david loves his schedule. nathaniel’s adjusting ok. packet might be a disaster, we’ll see. 8am classes seem to be fine. things are still okay.
I let go of: schedule.
Core Desire Check-in (bold, mindful, nourish, love):
- bold: i was bold about our picking new classes.
- mindful: mindful that kids are adjusting, i’m adjusting and this was an emotionally tough week.
- nourish: i would like to be better about my measurements here and see if i can be full again.
- love: i love how much love is around me.
What made me laugh this week: i laughed a lot with my friend Leslie.
What I tolerated this week: a lot of driving up and down the freeway from school to work.
My mood this week was: cranky and dejected.
I forgive myself for: being frustrated.
What I love right now: i love our three day weekend.
Here’s to a great week 36.
When I went on vacation in Australia, in July, I decided I wanted to try to keep a travel journal for the first time. I would work on it during the vacation and it could be my art for September.
I was already taking my Traveler’s Notebook with me so I picked up one of the blank inserts and covered it with the awesome My Mind’s Eye Hello World collection.
I made a small (doesn’t look so small but remember this was for three weeks’ of journaling) sample of items to take:
It included a lot of washi tape, alphas, journaling tags/stickers, a little paper, some tape, and some envelopes. I didn’t take scissors because I wasn’t checking any luggage and scissors are not allowed on carry ons. I brought tape and a stapler but I didn’t think to bring a glue stick, which I bought there. I also took 3 boxes of Instax film so I could print out on my Instax printer. (which i love!)
I even took the time to make a new watercolor sheet just in case I was in the mood for watercoloring (i was not.)
I wasn’t sure if this would work out but I really hoped it would! (btw, you can see many of my instagram photos from the trip here.)

I read the Impossible Views of the World as we traveled and it was interesting but not amazing. Meh.
I then moved to The Breakdown which I read in one breath. It was not as predictable for me. I liked it even though it’s not a genre I enjoy all that much.
I then moved to Our Chemical Hearts which was wonderful. I loved it and it was exactly what I needed at that moment in time.
I moved on to some Pema Chodron with Perfect Just As You Are which I didn’t give as much attention to as it deserved. but it was still amazing.
I then read Joy Diet in one breath too. I really enjoyed it and am still thinking about it.
I am now reading The Driver which is also totally not my genre. But I am liking it even though I’d say it has about 65% of my attention.
Books I Read this Week 2017 is a year-long project for 2017. You can read more about my projects for 2017 here.
Mind:
- I read: Outside of the books I’ve read this week, I haven’t done any other reading.
- I learned: I’ve been doing Stephanie’s Map Maker class still! And I am on the fence on the courageworks class, especially since they are closing their doors by the end of this year.
- I watched: Still only one hour of TV this week.
Body:
- Exercise: I came home from the trip and immediately went to work to make sure I was exercising!! I’ve been trying to introduce a new class each week, this week I did a new-to-me Vinyasa Yoga class and I went to a Sculpt and Abs class on Friday and it was crazy hard. I keep thinking those classes will not be cardio and yet they are!
- Monday: no exercise since I was in the car!
- Tuesday: Vinyasa Yoga
- Wednesday: Sculpt and Core and Mat Pilates
- Thursday: gBarre
- Friday: Body Pump Express and Sculpt and Abs
- Saturday&Sunday: resting all weekend
- Food: Since we traveled this past weekend. Food was tricky. I tried to eat my best and for the most part I managed to do so. I snacked on others’ food a bit more than I would have liked to but otherwise i am pretty proud of how clean i ate.
- Veggies I had: butternut squash, spaghetti squash, eggplants, zucchini, celery, cucumbers, broccoli rice, artichokes, kale and spinach.
- Protein: chicken breasts, chicken sausage, buffalo meat and eggs.
- I am still not hungry between meals. But i am still eating my chocolate and i need to come up with a plan for it.
- No coffee for seven weeks now. When I was in Ashland, I tried Mint Tea and fell in love and I’ve been drinking it a lot since!
- All the others: I’ve been a bit less diligent than usual this week. I will get back on the wagon.
Soul:
- I rested: Still sleeping strong unless I drink after 7pm. I’ve had all sorts of funny sleep last week, of course, but I am getting back on the saddle here.
- I connected: Connected with family this week, it was awesome!
- I journaled: I journaled only for mapmaker this week but i also started a simple daily journaling idea thanks to Stephanie Howell and I am so grateful to her (more on this later.)
- I made art: I did parts of my mapmaker homework!
So grateful for my progress, I have more shots on instagram.

As the summer was coming to a close, Jake and I kept talking about how we wanted to see if we could squeeze in one more quick holiday. We went to Australia at the beginning of summer so we felt like we wanted one quick one. We thought about SoCal or Tahoe or the middle of California. But couldn’t settle on one.
And then he suggested that maybe we should go see the eclipse. I told him everything was sold out (like six years ago.) The more we looked into it, the more it became impossible to pull it off. So he suggested we email my sister in law who’s originally from Ashland to see if we can pick her brain.
As it worked out, she was going to be in Ashland and had a friend who would let us stay at his house (and he was going to be out of town!) we hemmed and hawed for a few more days but then we just decided it was meant to be and we had to make it happen.
We got up early Saturday morning and got on the road to Ashland. It took us a long time to get there, but when we arrived, we got to see how her friend’s house was absolutely amazing, at the top of a hill with deer and other wildlife around us. It was truly such a gift.
We spent Saturday and Sunday in Ashland, with the kids playing with their cousins, and just relaxing. Sunday night we went to bed at 7pm and got up at 11:30pm so we could do the four-hour drive to Totality. We were worried about all the potential traffic so we decided to get on the road super early. We had some idea of where we might want to stop but we also weren’t sure what the situation would be like.
As it turned out, we had no traffic at all. We got to a rest area a little before where we had intended to stop so I told Jake we should check it out since it had bathrooms and all. It was very full but we found a spot pretty close to the bathroom and with a great view of the sun. It was 3am at this point, so we tried to get some sleep (we weren’t super successful.) and then patiently waited till the eclipse.
We got really lucky with the rest area which had a lot of bathrooms, all of which were being cleaned regularly. There was a church nearby passing out tea and coffee for free. When it came to be time, everyone ahhed at the same time and the birds flew away in fear. It was such a sense of community and a moment of awe.
I had given Jake such a hard time for wanting to see the 100%. Ashland had 97% so I wasn’t sure why we really needed to travel four hours just to see the extra 3% but I was so wrong. My very favorite part of the entire thing ended up being the one minute where I could watch it without glasses. It was an awe inspiring moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life. It was 1000% worth it. I’m so grateful we did it.
When it was over, we’d planned to go straight home even though it was 10+ hours of driving. As it worked out, we took 7+ hours to get back to Ashland and by then it was 7pm so we decided to spend the night in Ashland instead of doing something unsafe. (especially since we hadn’t slept the night before.)
So we spent one final night in Ashland and woke up super early Tuesday to come right back home. All in all, it was a crazy, insane, magical and one of a kind adventure!
