Another brand new project I am trying to tackle for 2012 is called Journey into Collage.
I will admit that I am super-scared even at the idea of collage. Especially when I see the works of Teesha Moore. Most of the collage I’ve seen uses magazines and I don’t have any magazines. I mean none. And I have no intention of getting them. I also don’t believe I am creative enough to make something so unique like she does.
So, even though I’ve considered it on and off, I’ve never really tackled collage. I couldn’t even really define it for you. I just decided somewhere along the line that it wasn’t something I could ever really do.
But then Donna Downey started posting her Collage Monday creations and suddenly it looked fun. It looked like something I might want to tackle, play around with, experiment with. Without buying magazines. Maybe using my scrappy and mixed media stash.
I’m not entirely sure how it’s going to work out, to be honest.
And I’ll be even more honest and tell you I might walk away from this one entirely.
But I am going to give it a try. I’ve already started a Pinterest Board with inspiration. I will be using a Moleskine sketchbook and just taking it one step at a time.
The goals are:
1. Experiment with paper-based collage – see if it’s something I enjoy
2. Find a way to make it meaningful for me
3. Create one page a week.
4. Try different mediums, textures and styles
5. Find a collection of artists who inspire me and whose work I might want to emulate as a starting point
There you go. Pretty simple I know but this one scares me quite a bit.
If you know any collage artists that you like I’d love for you to leave a comment so I can compile a list.
Instead of using magazines in your collage, try downloading some of the free ephemera and printing it off to use. Somerset Studio has a newletter that I get and there is always some free download in the newsletter. Just an idea for you.
thank you Pam! I am collecting sites with ephemera too! I will add somerset to my list! THank you 🙂 🙂
Don’t write it off. It’s fun. Rex Ray inspired me to try my hand at collage. I was hooked after I saw this video of him talking about how he got started, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK_7fTHTGSg.
Since then, I’ve turned into some kind of a hoarder. My magazines were too precious to cut up. So, whenever I’m out and about, I’ll just pick up whatever free paper, brochures, newspaper, magazines or postcards out there.
In my corner of the world, in Australia, places like libraries, galleries, museums and exhibition halls usually have lots of advertising material of upcoming events. These are usually very creatively done and may inspire you as well. Also, if you get junkmail, they can be useful too. Hope this helps!
I am off to watch Rex Ray right now. Never heard of him! THank you so so much for the wonderful ideas. Not like I need to hoard more than I already do LOL but still!! I love not having to add magazines to my life 🙂
Love Donna’s collage monday! SOunds like a fun project for the year, changing things up abit. I have been trying to get into Pineterst but can’t seem to get invited. Can you invite me PLEASE! I see so many create inspiration that I would like to put on my own board but can’t figured out how. Pleae help!
just invited you 🙂
I am scared to try collage too! It seems so freeing and creative…I struggle with both of these! lol Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
exactly the same issue here!!!!! my orderly programmer mind struggles a lot with the idea of collage 🙂
Tamara LaPorte at Willowing.ning.com has a Collage self study for $15.00 that is GREAT!!!

thank you!!
Kelly Kilmer uses collage beautifully, and updates her blog regularly. She has various online courses.
thank you so much! Because of you guys I discovered Kelly and bought one of her classes!! thank you!! 🙂
Fabulous that you are venturing into new territory! I think you can collage with any material, not just magazines 🙂 Claudine Hellmuth is pretty popular at collageartist.com
I have started collaging my own photos-plenty of color there. Experimenting now to see how different photo papers take inks. And heat, because I am intrigued by this guy’s concept of using acrylic medium to adhere things, but letting it dry and then using a tack iron to “glue” it together. Guess I need to order his book. http://www.talbot1.com/collage_supplies/
http://thecollagejournal.blogspot.com/ this man has been making a collage out of his daily newspaper for over six years. When I started art journalling I used to pick my favourite ones and use them in my own journal.
There are so many fantastic artists out there who have blogs and online courses. Boy it is hard to pick favorites. Some of the ones I like have already been mentioned, like Kelly Kilmer. Also look up Paula Phillips (aka Journal Artista)-she does Ustream videos twice a week and has a DVD out from Cloth, Paper Scissors. Traci Bautista has great classes and wrote the book Collage Unleashed and has a new book Doodles Unleashed coming out soon. Dina Wakley, Claudine Hellmuth ( she has a book Collage Discovery Workshop). There is another book that I can’t remember the title of but has a series of collage exercises to work your way through various styles of collage. Just start ripping and tearing the paper and glue it down!
Good luck with it. I wanted to suggest that you ask your friends for their recycled magazines when they are done with them. The ads and stunning photography are what I often use. plus catalogs that come into our house, like Patagonia- amazing photos. I really like National Geographic
and Vogue. I do buy the occasional magazine but look at the photos before I buy one. Also all kinds of ephemera are all around us.
thank you for all these suggestions and inspiration. I knew about a few of them but discovered Kelly and Paula thanks to you!! thank you!!
For individual images I love The Graphics Fairy at http://graphicsfairy.blogspot.com/
For a more vintage paper style try Mary Green at http://greenpaper.typepad.com/
thank you for these! I will check them out!!
Karen traci batista is having a free class as part of a series at strathmore workshops. It’s more art journal in this session. What size moleskin are you using?
yes yes! I am taking it 🙂 I am using the sketch one here 🙂
