The Non-Designer's Design Book Don't be a wimp. Don't be afraid to create your Design (or your Life) with plenty of blank space -- it's rest for the eyes and the soul. Don't be afraid to be asymmetrical, to uncenter your format -- it often makes the effect stronger. It's okay to do the unexpected. Don't be afraid to make words very large or very small: don't be afraid to speak loudly or to speak in a whisper. Both can be effective in the right place. Don't be afraid to make your graphics very bold or very minimal, as long as the result complements or reinforces your design or your attitude.
Today's passage is from a non-fiction book. I don't know where I read about The Non-Designer's Design Book but I am glad I did. It's a neat little book on very basic design principles. I'm not a designer, I don't know if the contents are really amazing but they taught me a bit, especially the bit about type since I knew little about type. The book starts with a design section where
she talks about four main principles: proximity, alignment, repetition, contrast. It then moves on to a section about type where she explains the different categories of type and then talks about size, weight, structure, form, direction, and color. If you have never read about design, I think this is a neat little book to look at. If you know better books, please share. The excerpt is from the review chapter of the design section. |
