Mean Genes Most animals
are lazy. Take mice, for example. Scientists investigating the effects of extreme exercise
naturally want mice that are long-distance runners. The trouble is, mice don't want to run
marathons any more than most humans. When mice are placed on tiny treadmills, many of
them will simply go on strike. They will even sit on the moving belt to the point that the skin
on their butts being to get scratched and scraped. The mice are ingenious in their ability to
avoid exercise, positioning themselves against walls, splaying their feet at extreme angles --
anything to avoid jogging. Short one, but the images of mice on tiny treadmills made me smile. On top of that, the images of mice resisting to the treadmill made me smile even wider. Exercise is my weak spot. I hate to exercise. I always have and I always will. I suck at all sports. I would love to hear how to remedy any of this, but till then, the mice and I will have that resistance in common. I can't remember where I read about Mean Genes but I am really glad I did. I've been reading it for several days now and I find it fascinating. It's also neat that no reviewer rated it below 4 stars in Amazon, not that it really means anything but it's neat. I suspect I might excerpt several parts of this novel since there are quite a few next parts, but here's one that made me smile. |
